Echography in anesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine: A beginner's guide

Are you looking for the essentials you need to learn the basics of echography for anesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine? This is what this book offers you! These few pages condense the essential knowledge to make getting started with echography in emergency situations easier. Ultrasounds are presented in great detail in order to facilitate and optimize the medical diagnosis process. As a doctor, you will first be placed in front of the machine in order to take the pictures that will serve to answer the questions asked. Just as the author did, you will realize that, when facing the patient with the machine, the best echographic examination is worth nothing without a good clinical examination. As a “beginner’s guide”, this book also offers self-training procedure that lays the foundations of the “FAST” learning method. This FAST Program of Echography allows you to learn the process by watching, feeling and talking. This training course is based on an ancient methodology that centers on the learning of a manual gesture: ‘practice makes perfect’. This book will show you that you can quickly master this Program of Echography, and will in turn increase your self-confidence when taking care of your patients. Have a nice trip through the fascinating world of ultrasounds!

Anesthesia Oral Board Review: Knocking Out the Boards

The accreditation process for anesthesia in the United States is considered one of the most difficult in all medical specialties, with residents required to pass both an oral and written exam to gain certification. This book is specially designed for the American Board of Anesthesiology Oral Examination. The evidence-based approach is presented in a concise outline-oriented format, with an emphasis on test results and visual images. The Knockout Treatment Plan demonstrates the correct method of managing the case to the satisfaction of the examiners, while the Technical Knockout sections give additional tips for successfully passing the examination. The straightforward format of this book makes it suitable not only as an oral review book but also as an introduction to anesthesia rotations for medical students, medical interns, and nurse anesthetist students; furthermore, the book can be used as a technical study guide for anesthesia residents. More than 100 topics in this book have already been board-review tested by residents.

Clinical Pediatric Anesthesia: A Case-Based Handbook

Through 71 case presentations, Clinical Pediatric Anesthesia covers the field of pediatric anesthesiology with a practical, point-of-care approach. Each concisely written case is organized by introduction, learning objectives, case presentation, discussion, summary, annotated references, and further reading. In a style akin to the oral board examinations, discussions are framed as questions and answers to encourage thorough analysis and understanding by the reader. Key words are highlighted to emphasize important points, and annotated references allow for further exploration of topics. Multiple approaches often exist for the care of children in any given situation, so various options are discussed when appropriate with advantages and disadvantages closely examined. Since questions posed by real-life clinical situations call for active thinking, this case-based book promotes the same evaluation and decision-making skills required of the pediatric anesthesia clinician.

Trauma Intensive Care (Pittsburgh Critical Care Medicine)

Management of critically-ill trauma patients presents multiple challenges that are unique to this patient population. Optimal management of the trauma patient requires establishing priorities of care, minimizing complications, and striving to return the trauma victim to the best possible functional outcome. Yet, most books devoted to trauma focus on prehospital care, the initial assessment of trauma patients, and operative management of specific injuries. Part of the Pittsburgh Critical Care Medicine series, this book will help intensivisits involved in the care of trauma patients implement best care practices for trauma victims in the intensive care unit. Chapters address issues such as: management priorities for trauma patients in the ICU, the use of monitors and drains in trauma patients, resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock, massive transfusions and coagulopathy, ventilator management of trauma patients including patients with chest trauma, as well as management ICU strategies and solutions for specific types of trauma, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and burn management.

Anaesthesia for Day Case Surgery

by Jan Jakobsson (Author)

The use of ambulatory or 'day case' surgery has grown tremendously in Western countries in recent years at the expense of more traditional in-hospital surgical care. In the US, up to 70-80% of all surgical procedures are currently performed on an ambulatory basis. The adaptation of day case surgery still varies considerably between countries and even within countries in Europe.
The transition from traditional in-hospital care to day case surgery or ambulatory procedure calls for vigilant planning of steps in preoperative care and a team effort to optimise all parts of patient care as well as care logistics. Drug selection, drug combination, drug administration and preparation of patients are all substantially different in the day case surgery setting than in the traditional in-hospital care setting. It is therefore crucial that anaesthetists, surgeons and other clinicians involved in administering day case surgery are aware of these differences to ensure safe and effective delivery of care.
Part of the Oxford Anaesthesia Library, this practical pocketbook provides an overview of the scope of day surgical anaesthesia and features simple and ready-to-use suggestions for the selection of drugs, techniques, and protocols to follow in everyday day-case surgical clinical practice.
