The Definition of Death: Contemporary Controversies

The authors recognize in their analyses that the definition of death is as much a social or value construct as a scientific one.
This book about brain death is as much to do with legal and philosophical considerations, public attitudes and public policy as with clinical aspects. It arose out of a conference in 1995, but is much more scholarly and coherent than a conference proceedings—with authors referring to each others' chapters and the Editors writing an introductory commentary to each group of chapters. Each chapter has its own reference list and all are well written, making the book as a whole a rewarding read. Its focus is on the US, but there are chapters on specific public policy problems in Denmark, Germany and Japan.
This book is an excellent compilation of articles stating the present position in relation to brain death and clearly demonstrates the ethical dilemmas surrounding the concept of death and its determination in practice. It can be wholeheartedly recommended to those interested in brain death from almost any perspective." -- Journal of Medical Ethics

Extracorporeal Life Support

This handbook is directed at intensivists, surgeons, pediatricians, residents, perfusionists, nurses and ECMO(extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) technologists involved in the care of patients with respiratory or cardiac failure which may require extracorporeal support. It provides specific information on the mechanics of ECMO, the equipment required, the physiology of extracorporeal support, and the management of patients supported on ECMO. Current results of ECMO and alternative support options are also reviewed in some chapters of this book. The authors' goal is to present clinically useful information in a manner that enables the reader to rapidly assess clinical situations, troubleshoot problems, and understand the expected results of therapy. Today, ECMO support has an important role in most major medical centers caring for critically-ill patients, whether for neonatal respiratory failure, cardiac failure, or for cardiopulmonary support after cardiac surgery or thoracic organ transplantation. No doubt new applications and refinements of this technology will appear in the future.

Mechanics of ECMO
Safety/Monitoring Devices
Peripheral Access for ECMO Support

Bonica's Management of Pain

Bonica's Management of Pain is the "gold standard" text in pain management. This is the first and only textbook to take a comprehensive and practical approach to all areas of pain management, including its psychological issues. From cancer and surgical pain to visceral pain, this book covers diseases, treatments, causes, and effects. The first of three parts covers the fundamental aspects of pain, its anatomy, physiological and psychological bases. The second part addresses the techniques that alleviate pain and, though the primary focus is on analgesic block, other methods are covered. Clinical impressions and observations of diseases and disorders with painful syndromes constitute the third part of the book.

Advanced Pediatric Life Support: The Practical Approach

This international bestseller covers the full advanced paediatric life support course, with the core sections for the abbreviated one-day course clearly picked out. The book provides practical guidance for managing children and infants in the first life-threatening "golden" hour. This new edition goes beyond immediate management to include stabilisation and transfer.
The 3rd edition has affiliations with the European Resuscitation Council, the Resuscitation Council of South Africa and Australian Advanced Paediatric Life Support Course. This latest edition has undergone some refinement. The initial two parts of the manual have had only minimal revision bringing them into line with current resuscitation practice and add further practical advice such as the use of semi-automatic defibrillators in children. The main revision has been in the seriously ill child section. Chapter headings have been changed to reflect the presenting problem of children. Layout and presentation of this section has changed dramatically.
The final sections on trauma and practical procedures have had only minimal alterations. It is noteworthy that with the affiliation to Australia, an additional appendix has been added dealing with envenomation.
