Pediatric Sedation Outside of the Operating Room: A Multispecialty International Collaboration

This is a major revision, updating, and expansion of the leading single-source volume on pediatric sedation outside of the operating room. Edited and written by an international roster of outstanding experts, it is the only book aimed at the broad range of specialists who deliver pediatric sedation in the non-OR setting.
The Second Edition features a significant expansion of contributions from international leaders and individual new chapters on pre-sedation assessment; sedatives’ short- and long-term effects on neurocognition; non-pharmacologic distractions; Michael Jackson’s death and medical ethics; the role of simulation in safety and training; and palliative sedation in terminally ill children.
The specialty-specific chapters continue to be geared toward all sedation providers, regardless of where they practice and patient safety is again emphasized. Fundamental chapters provide in-depth reviews of topics which include, among others, physiology and pharmacology. The book presents the latest guidelines across the specialties, both in the United States and abroad and noteworthy, ongoing research endeavors.
From reviews of the First Edition:
“This meritorious volume is a splendid collection of materials from highly experienced authors…I will make extensive use of this reference as the academic medical center in which I work continues to build sedation practices and assess credentialing/privileging aspects for professionals of all fields.” —Joseph R. Tobin, MD in Journal of the American Medical Association.
“Brings together sedation practice from a broad range of specialties into one well-written pediatric text…I will certainly be using this book as a reference text in the future.” — Pediatric Anesthesia.
“The first [text] directed at all specialists that treat children who require some sedation…also recognizes the contributions to pediatric sedation of many international societies and governmental organizations…It should be on the shelves of all office-based practices.” —Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology.

Transfusion in the Intensive Care Unit

Due to a high incidence of anemia, critically ill patients are frequently transfused, with up to 40% of patients receiving a transfusion during their stay in the Intensive Care Unit. It has become increasingly clear that there is an association between transfusion and adverse outcomes, underlining the need for a careful assessment of the risks and benefits of a blood transfusion. In the last decade, there have been several large clinical trials that have studied red blood cell transfusion triggers in various ICU patient populations, allowing us to take a personalized approach to transfusion. Moreover, ICU patients often suffer from coagulopathy. Recent studies have addressed the effectiveness of fresh frozen plasma and platelets to prevent or treat bleeding. Aiming at a personalized therapy approach in transfusion practice, this book is the first to offer a comprehensive summary of transfusion triggers for red blood cells in specific ICU patient populations and specific conditions. In addition, it discusses evidence for triggers for plasma and platelets and outlines the most common adverse effects of transfusion in the ICU. Transfusion in the Intensive Care Unit is a practical handbook that can be used in everyday practice to guide transfusion and thus will serve as a valuable resource for physicians, fellows and residents working in Intensive Care, Anesthesiology and Cardiac Surgery.

Essential Equations for Anaesthesia: Key Clinical Concepts for the FRCA and EDA

A sound knowledge of equations and their use, derivation and clinical application is an absolute prerequisite for any anaesthetist. As a result, equations are a favourite question topic of examiners, particularly in the viva examinations. Many candidates answer these poorly, losing valuable marks and floundering when they face what they perceive as "nightmare" questions. This book provides a simple, portable, reference guide to all the equations that candidates may be asked about during their examinations. The content is split into four sections; physics, pharmacology, physiology and statistics. Each equation is clearly explained, derived where necessary, and placed into a clinical context using a worked or clinically relevant example to demonstrate its use. Units and relevant terms are given and where required, clear, concise diagrams have also been provided to simplify understanding. Written by anaesthetic trainees, this is an essential resource for preparation for the FRCA, EDA and other anaesthetic examinations.

Echography in anesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine: A beginner's guide

Are you looking for the essentials you need to learn the basics of echography for anesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine? This is what this book offers you! These few pages condense the essential knowledge to make getting started with echography in emergency situations easier. Ultrasounds are presented in great detail in order to facilitate and optimize the medical diagnosis process. As a doctor, you will first be placed in front of the machine in order to take the pictures that will serve to answer the questions asked. Just as the author did, you will realize that, when facing the patient with the machine, the best echographic examination is worth nothing without a good clinical examination. As a “beginner’s guide”, this book also offers self-training procedure that lays the foundations of the “FAST” learning method. This FAST Program of Echography allows you to learn the process by watching, feeling and talking. This training course is based on an ancient methodology that centers on the learning of a manual gesture: ‘practice makes perfect’. This book will show you that you can quickly master this Program of Echography, and will in turn increase your self-confidence when taking care of your patients. Have a nice trip through the fascinating world of ultrasounds!
